As CBS News’ Anna Werner spoke with Oklahoma tornado survivor Barbara Garcia, the two stood amid mounds of unrecognizable rubble that used to be a neighborhood.
At least two dozen people were killed, more than 200 were injured, and a number of homes and structures in the Oklahoma City suburbs were destroyed by the mile-wide twister that was on the ground for about 40 minutes Monday.
Garcia told Werner she felt lucky to be alive. She recounted her tornado “game plan,” which included taking cover in a small bathroom in her house. She said she never lost consciousness as the tornado lifted her and her dog into the air and spun them around.
“It was there and it was gone,” she said. “Just, no time.”
But once things settled down, the pup was missing.
“I hollered for my little dog and he didn’t answer, or he didn’t come, so I know he’s in here somewhere,” she said, scanning the rubble with a look of sad disbelief on her face.
Then, the mood of the interview took a happy turn.
